On Monday March 4, 2019 the Hellenic Bible Society organized an event of historical content for its 200 years of presence and action in Greece (1819-2019) with the main theme: “The Word lasts forever” in the Auditorium of the Catholic Church in Athens.
The chairman of the General Committee of the Hellenic Bible Society His Eminence Metropolitan of Demetrias Mr. Ignatios was the chairman of the first session, who mentioned both the necessity of the event and the universal character of the Society. Mr. George Sochos, who is the Communications Manager of the Hellenic Bible Society was the first speaker on the subject: “The Bible Society in Greece. The first steps [1818-1848]”, he stressed the contacts the representatives of the Bible Society had with the leaders of the Orthodox Church in our country and the positive response of the latter to the work of the Bible Societies. Mr. Ioannis Tsevas, surgeon dentist, director of the Greek Historical Evangelical Archives and member of the Hellenic Bible Society, was the second speaker on the subject: “The Biblical Work in Greek hands [1859-1933]”, he stressed particularly the work of the “Bible Salesmen”, who for many decades were untiring distributers of the Word of God in the Greek nation.
The chairman of the administrative council of the Hellenic Bible Society and pastor of the Greek Evangelical Church in Volos Rev. Meletios Meletiadis was the chairman of the second session. Mr. Charis Dagounakis, Lawyer, Former Executive and current Special Associate of the H.B.S was the first speaker on the subject: “Great Modern Steps [1933-1992]”, who stressed particularly the translations of the Bible Society that took place on the second half of the 20th century and followed the linguistic changes of each period. Mr. Michail Chatzigiannis, theologian, general secretary of the Hellenic Bible Society, was the second speaker on the subject: “Latest Developments [1993-2019]”, he mentioned the modern, multifaceted activity of the Society with the opening of the new reality by the establishment of the Hellenic Bible Society after 1992, the cooperation with the Church of Greece and the strengthening of the relations with both the Catholic and Evangelical Churches in our country.
